What is Aqiqa?

Aqiqah is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed upon the birth of a child. It involves the sacrifice of livestock, with the meat distributed among family, friends, and members of the community in need. It is a virtuous act of gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the blessing of a new child.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself performed Aqiqah for his two beloved grandsons, Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husain (peace be upon them), underlining its importance in Islamic tradition.

An Aqiqah ceremony typically takes place on the seventh day after a baby’s birth, though it may be performed later. It is a joyful celebration where cooked meat is shared with loved ones and those facing hardship.

“Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female.”

— Aisha (RA), narrated from the Prophet ﷺ  [Tirmidhi]

Sadaqah at the Time of Aqiqah

Alongside the Aqiqah sacrifice, Muslims are encouraged to shave the child’s head and donate the equivalent weight of their hair in silver to those in need. This is a separate act of Sadaqah, embodying Islam’s emphasis on charity and care for the poor.

ALNASREEN facilitates this Sadaqah on your behalf. A donation of $20 covers the required silver weight, ensuring this beautiful Sunnah is fulfilled completely.
